Burien Interim Arts Space
Ignition Northwest sponsored B/ IAS, the Burien/ Interim Art Space. B/ IAS was a year-long experiment that combined and transformed the concepts of art, temporary green spaces, and community gathering. The B/ IAS project took over an undeveloped city block at Burien’s Town Square and transformed it into a temporary sculpture garden for one year.
The project’s most notable art piece was “The Passage,” a sculpture depicting a mother and child walking together to share and explore life. This artwork was first created by Dan Das Mann and Karen Cusolito for the 2005 Burning Man Arts Festival. The figures stand a dramatic 30′ and 20′ tall and were fabricated out of recycled and scrap metal.
In addition to its sculpture garden, the B/ IAS site was used as an event space to host civic events such as “Night of a Thousand Pumpkins”. A pea patch program that was developed on the site went on to spawn numerous pea patches around Burien.
